Studio McIntyre was an early project for Ezra. The design and build were both completed while he attended The University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture.
This studio was built as a remodel to a bare industrial complex unit in Austin, TX. The design called for resolving the shooting space, storage spaces, entertaining and office space for two professional photographers.
The design of the diagonal fold in Studio McIntyre allowed for us the maximize the exterior and interior floor areas depending on their functions. The fold starts very subtly at the floor nearest the entrance to the studio and reaches bar height at the kitchen. This allows for a more natural standing area for entertaining clients and employees during shoots and meetings. At the storage area, in the middle of the fold, we have the furthest projection at roughly shoulder height. This forces you to walk this distance from the wall and allows a protected canopy for the high powered lighting packs to nestle against the wall. The highest and furthest projection of the fold reaches out, above the users heads, to scoop the natural light of the skylight and bring it down into the office area.
The build of Studio McIntyre took place over a week. Benoit and I completed all of the phases of construction, including: plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, machining, framing and fine finish carpentry.
